Detoxification Services

Program Description:
The Detoxification Unit is a licensed service provider under the Marchman Act that uses pharmacotherapy and counseling to assist clients in managing toxicity and withdrawal from the effects of substance abuse impairment. The medically monitored program provides 24/7 medical and nursing supervision to help the withdrawal from alcohol and/or other drugs in a safe manner. The staff focuses on the absence of withdrawal symptoms, stability of vital signs, and the education of the client. Detoxification is individualized and length of stay is dependent on the substance, however, the stay is usually from 3-5 days.

The Detox Unit is licensed by the Florida Department of Children (DCF) and Families.

Eligibility Criteria:
Voluntary

  • Clients may arrive as self referrals
  • Must be 18 yrs or older
  • Must apply for admission
  • Person is substance abuse impaired

Involuntary

  • May arrive through law enforcement, ER, physician or court involvement
  • Person has lost the power of self control with respect to substance use, and either
  • Has inflicted, threatened or attempted to inflict physical harm on self or another, or
  • Is in of substance abuse services and by reason of substance abuse impairment his/her judgment has been so impaired that the individual is incapable of appreciating his/her need for services and of making a rational decision in regard to getting services

Persons Most Able to Benefit from this Program:

  • Persons unable to safely detoxify without close monitoring
  • Persons unable to fulfill personal or professional responsibilities due to substance abuse
  • Persons who consistently use substances in spite of negative consequences
  • Individuals in need of motivation for continuing treatment
  • Individuals referred by law enforcement
  • Individuals requiring detox prior to entering treatment

Exclusionary Criteria:

  • Physically violent
  • Blood Alcohol Level over .300 requires prior medical clearance
  • Non-ambulatory conditions
  • IV medications
  • Uncontrolled seizure disorder
  • Temperature of 101 or more
  • Severe wound problems
  • Acute congestive heart failure
  • Any other medical condition which the staff deems not safe for the admission to a non-medical Unit such as active delirium tremors
  • Anyone with medical problems beyond the scope of care provided by the Unit will not be accepted until such time the condition has been treated and/or medically verified in writing as having been stabilized and final approval given by GCC physician to admit

Services:

  • 8 detox beds
  • 24/7 licensed nursing service and tech support services
  • Marchman Act/substance use evaluation by a medical staff member
  • Physical examination by a psychiatrist, MD or ARNP
  • Daily medical contact and oversight of the medical regimen
  • Discharge planning and referrals
  • Structured therapeutic activities
  • HIV counseling and testing
  • 12 steps meetings

Treatment Planning:

  • Treatment planning and related services to be provided occurs directly with the client
  • Discharge /transitional planned is started on admission
  • Treatment plan meetings conducted twice weekly
  • Services are tailored to the strengths, needs, abilities and preferences of the client
  • Clients are strongly encouraged to attend therapeutic and support groups
  • Services promote personal responsibility
  • Goals of treatment are not the sole responsibility of a single staff person or a lone consumer, but are the responsibility shared by all in an active partnership with the client
  • Family and other support membership is encouraged
